Zoom Ironically Asks its Employees to Work From Offices

Zoom

In a strange move, Zoom is reportedly asking its employees to come back and work from the office – at least two days a week.

This hybrid model requires all employees living nearby a Zoom office to appear, but that “nearby” range is set to 50 miles, which is infeasible to some. This is ironic to a company like Zoom, which promoted remote working culture extensively in periods like COVID-19 and after.

Partially Ending Remote Working Mode

Zoom, the company that flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now making strange moves to survive. Following the footsteps of other regular companies, the video conferencing platform is now asking it’s employees to work from an office at least two days a week.

This hybrid format is unexpected for a company like Zoom, which heavily promotes remote working as the new culture during pandemic and post-pandemic times. And now, calling employees back to the office is so hypocritical. Responding to Business Insider, a Zoom spokesperson said;

“We believe that a structured hybrid approach — meaning employees that live near an office need to be onsite two days a week to interact with their teams — is most effective for Zoom.”

Zoom’s own 2022 survey found that 69% of workers considered it essential that they can choose for themselves whether to work remotely, on-site or a mix of the two.

And 45% said they would likely look for a new job if they weren’t allowed to work from their ideal location. This new norm may push some Zoom employees to switch careers or stick to the company while it’s struggling so hard.

Well, to survive anyway, Zoom recently got on the AI trend to make related features for it’s platform, where a recent update to Zoom’s Terms of Service allows it to use customers’ content to train AI and there’s no way to opt out!

Though it makes sense to use new technologies to survive, Zoom is used for medical appointments, sensitive talks and other private matters that should be kept confidential. So allowing the platform to use your data for training it’s products is not good and makes the platform less trustworthy.
