To let users easily convert their regular videos to Shorts, YouTube made a dedicated tool to recompose the current long videos to a quick Short video.
Rolling out in the next few weeks, this tool allows you to choose a layout, zoom and crop the video while making Shorts. This aside, there’s a new Collab feature to put a Short video aside from a regular video, making it a collaboration of both.
Composing Shorts From Long Videos
YouTube announced several new Shorts features this week to compete better against TikTok and Instagram. While most are simple and tiny additions, a notable among them is a recomposition tool to let creators convert regular videos into Shorts.
Rolling out in the next few weeks, YouTube will start beta testing this new tool with some creators already. Once available, you can pick a regular horizontal video to adjust the layout, zoom and crop the video segment to make it a vertical, short video. Also, you can use a split screen effect to “preserve key parts of your long-form content”.
Though several third-party tools offer such editing services, one from YouTube will always make it easier. Further, there’s a new Collab tool(under Remix) to make videos and Shorts in a side-by-side format. This feature is rolling out for YouTube iOS clients now, with the Android counterpart to receive it later.
And finally, there’s a new Q&A sticker option for Shorts to let you ask questions to your followers “and get responses right in your comments“. This is similar to what we see on Instagram and TikTok as a new way to keep the community engaged.
