To increase the platform’s engagement, YouTube is running a new experiment to let users make Shorts out of comments from others’ videos!
Calling these “viewer-created Shorts featuring comments“, YouTube says it doesn’t inform the creators nor the commentators – of using their content to make Shorts. This experiment is limited to only some users on iOS and Android, so we may or may not see it rolling out to the general public later on.
Comments-Only YouTube Shorts
Though YouTube has billions of fans worldwide, the platform competes against TikTok and Instagram in the short-video space. From a wide range of tools to paying creators, YouTube does everything to keep its users engaged.
In this pursuit, the video platform is experimenting with a new form of Shorts – where viewers can make short videos of just comments taken from others’ videos. And the best thing here – you don’t need the permission of anyone to do it! YouTube says it won’t inform either the creator(from whose videos the comments are drawn) or the commentators.
Calling this feature “viewer-created Shorts featuring comments,” this experiment is live for a small group of Android and iOS users, where they can use a comment from a clip they’re watching to create a separate Shorts video from it.
Makers of such Shorts can find their videos under the channel’s home page aside from the standard YouTube Shorts feed. YouTube didn’t offer screenshots to know what this feature would look like but says the only way to stop this from happening(for creators) is to turn off comments for their videos.
