YouTube is reportedly testing mini-games on it’s platform, hoping to rake in more revenue besides advertising.
According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube invited it’s employees to test a new product called ‘Playables’, which will let them play games on the YouTube app/website. The company mentioned several games are available for testing while stating Stack Bounce, an arcade game, as an example.
Mini Games on YouTube App
After Netflix, YouTube decided to test mini video games to lure in more users. Called “Playables“, the Wall Street Journal reports that YouTube has invited it’s employees to test these games initially and provide their feedback.
Though the company mentions several games available for testing, it only mentions Stack Bounce in it’s email invite as an example. Stack Bounce is an ad-supported arcade game that gets players to smash layers of bricks with a bouncing ball. It’s so common that there are hundreds of similar games available on the Play Store.
Users can play these games on any YouTube platform, whether on the app or it’s website. Still, it’s unclear whether it’ll be available to everyone or just the premium subscribers, but the company sees this as an additional revenue stream aside from the current advertising model, which is gradually falling apart in the modern world.
As for how well this feature gets clicked and played should be seen later on. Netflix, on the other hand, is trying to expand with more games and the ability to play them on TVs and even letting subscribers use their phones as controllers for playing. Well, reports stated that less than 1% of the platform’s subscribers play these games, which makes us wonder what triggered YouTube to introduce “Playables”.
