Xperia Z3v: How to Root

A new method to root some Xperia devices was released recently and today’s tutorial shows how to root the Xperia Z3v, Verizon’s variant of the Z3.

This new exploit to gain root access on the Xperia Z3v will also work on the T-Mobile Xperia Z3 too. Yesterday I amended the tutorial for the Xperia Z3 root tutorial to include that information so if you have that device then you’ll definitely want to check it out. However, if you have the Xperia Z3v, then you’ll want to follow the tutorial listed below.

The process is exactly the same but I decided to make this separate tutorial to minimize any confusion for which method works for which device.

Requirements

Before you start to gain root access to the Verizon Wireless Xperia Z3v, you’re going to need to do a few things before hand. Firstly, you’re going to need to be running the version of Android that was shipped with on the Z3v when it launched. If you have accepted an OTA update, or if you purchased your Xperia Z3v after an update was applied to it, then you’re going to need to downgrade to the original KitKat firmware.

Secondly, you’re going to need to install the Java Development Kit software for your version of Windows. So you’ll need to click that green link in the previous sentence, accept the terms and conditions set by Oracle, and then download the version of Java for your specific version of Windows. Unless your computer is 10+ years old(or so) then you’re most likely going to need the ‘Windows x64’ version of the installer. It’s an .exe file so you’ll just need to download it, double-click on it and then install it to your PC.

Once all that is done, then we can proceed with the tutorial itself. . .

Verizon Xperia Z3v Root

  1. Download the Root .zip File
  2. Enable Developer Mode on the Xperia Z3v
  3. Enable USB Debugging on the Xperia Z3v
  4. Download and Install the Sony USB Drivers
  5. Reboot Your PC
  6. Connect the Xperia Z3v to the Computer with a Micro USB Cable
  7. Extract the Downloaded .zip File Onto Your Computer(from step 1)
  8. Open the Folder Where the .zip File was Extracted to
  9. Hold Down the Shift Button on the Keyboard and Right-Click on an Empty Space Within the Folder
  10. Left-Click on the ‘Open command window here’ Option
  11. Type the Following into the Command Prompt. . .
  12. exploit.bat
  13. Then Press ‘Enter’ on the Keyboard
  14. Wait Until You See the ‘Success’ Message
  15. Then Type in the Following into the Command Prompt. . .
  16. root.bat
  17. Press ‘Enter’ on the Keyboard
  18. Wait Until the Xperia Z3v Reboots
  19. Unlock the Xperia Z3v, Launch the Google Play Store, Then Install SuperSU if Needed

Explanation

Remember, you’re going to have to have the Java Development Kit and Sony’s USB drivers installed so please remember to install it before you begin this process. You’re also going to need to enable the Developer Mode as well as USB Debugging on the Xperia Z3v before you start. Once all of that is done, go ahead and download the zip file linked in step 1 of the tutorial, extract it and then launch the command prompt within that folder as described in the tutorial above.

Once you have the command prompt open, you can connect your Xperia Z3v to the PC with a regular micro USB cable. Once that is done, go ahead and type the ‘exploit.bat’ command and then press enter. You’ll see some text scrolling in the command prompt and you should keep your eye out for the ‘Success’ message. Be patient while the exploit does its thing and when you see that success message then you can start typing in the next command ‘root.bat’. After running this root.bat script, your Sony Xperia Z3v will reboot and you’ll be taken back into Android.

Xperia Z3v Exploit Success

From here you can unlock the Z3v, launch the Google Play Store and then install SuperSU if needed. From here, you likely do not want to accept any OTA updates that get pushed to you. Instead, you’ll want to install a custom recovery and flash a pre-rooted custom ROM that way.
