Xiaomi Flags Telegram as a Dangerous App, Blocks on MIUI

Telegram's CEO Explained How Ads in Their Platform Work

Adhering to a local security policy, Xiaomi’s MIUI is reportedly blocking the Telegram app in China, calling it dangerous.

While Xiaomi didn’t explain what constitutes Telegram to be dangerous, many assumed the move was to support the Chinese government in blocking apps that facilitate free speech. The country has a long history of curtailing privacy apps and making it’s alternatives meet local needs.

Blocking Telegram as Dangerous

Launching MIUI 13 last year, Xiaomi added a security feature that flags malicious apps on the device and even blocks their installation. While it was introduced to safeguard the community, Xiaomi faced criticism for blocking apps that facilitate basic privacy needs.

Many thought the move was in secret partnership with the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) to monitor users’ activities and censor apps that are against their policies. At one point, Xiaomi blocked apps that allowed to users alter their device network settings. This grew the earlier suspicion, as MIUI is hindering their fundamental rights.

Well, now, MIUI 13 is reportedly flagging the Telegram app, too, in China. Netizens have reported seeing a warning stating that Telegram “has not passed Xiaomi’s security review. This app is fraudulent, and using it may lead to risks like fraudulent deductions or unwarranted consumption“.

Advising users to activate security measures, MIUI has removed Telegram from users devices! This triggered the community, who accused China’s censorship is growing to new levels every day and even the attempts to circumvent these actions will be notified to the police.

While it’s unexpected for Xiaomi to block a notable application, Telegram is, for a reason, being used for private communications by many. The platform offers reliable security tools to make secure chats and evade censorship.
