X formerly known as Twitter is now slowly rolling out an update that will allow everyone on the platform to make audio and video calls with other users. The audio and video call feature was initially available for premium users on iOS and Android, the users who have a monthly subscription to what was previously known as Twitter Blue.
Enrique Barragan, an engineer for the company shared the news on the platform himself. The audio and video call feature was initially launched for iOS users last year, allowing Twitter Blue subscribers to make calls on the platform. It was the first step in making X, the Everything app that Elon Musk has wanted to make X since he acquired the social media platform back in 2022. The calling feature was launched for Android users earlier this year but still it was limited to paying subscribers only.
In January, Elon Musk announced that the calling feature on X will roll out for all users as soon as the company is confident that this feature is robust. This feature is rolling out to all users gradually as there are very limited free users who can make calls on the platform. Chances are that if you try to make a video or audio call on the platform, you will be asked to subscribe to the premium plan. So, you have to wait a bit to get the calling feature on the platform for free.
The official X support page said that now all accounts can make or receive audio and video calls on the platform, though both parties must have at least contacted each other through a direct message once. Previously, the support page said only, “Premium subscribers have the ability to make audio and video calls”.
Enrique Barragan also said that users will receive calls from everyone on the app if they want to. DM settings will automatically change when this feature will be available for them. The DM setting will automatically allow users to receive calls from the users they follow. However, there is an option through which users can receive calls from everyone on the app if they want but for that, they have to change the Direct Message settings manually.
