Windows 11 has now exceeded 400 million active monthly devices, according to data from Microsoft, as reported by Windows Central. This marks a significant milestone for the operating system and it is expected to reach 500 million monthly active devices by 2024.
The adoption rate of Windows 11 has been slower than Windows 10. Consequently, Microsoft has established modest goals for Windows 11. According to the company’s internal data, Microsoft has successfully achieved all it’s internal targets for it’s latest operating system. Windows 11 has surpassed the company’s initial expectations from a user’s perspective.
Microsoft introduced Windows 11 in October 2021, bringing about a complete visual overhaul compared to it’s predecessor. The new Windows version features a fresh boot screen, a modernized taskbar, a new startup sound and new widgets. However, it took Microsoft nearly two years to achieve the milestone of 400 million monthly active devices with the latest Windows. In contrast, Windows 10, launched in June 2015, reached 400 million monthly active devices within just one year; by 2020, Windows 10 had reached 1 billion monthly active devices.
It is worth noting that Windows 10 was offered as a free upgrade for one year for Windows 8 and 7 users, substantially increasing the number of Windows 10 users. Many users rushed to upgrade to Windows 10 due to the one-year free upgrade window. After the initial year, users were required to purchase Windows as they typically do for their supported PCs.
On the other hand, Windows 11 was not provided as a free upgrade for all computers running Windows 10. Windows 11 was only compatible with computers released after 2018, primarily due to Microsoft’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) requirement. Computers launched with Windows 10 in 2015, 2016 and 2017 could also not run Windows 11. The TPM requirement was a key factor contributing to the slower adoption rate of the latest Windows.
Since it’s launch, the latest operating system has received substantial updates, new and innovative features and optimizations to enhance the user experience. With the most recent update, Microsoft has introduced more AI-based features, including Copilot, into the Windows platform. Microsoft is also rumored to be working on it’s next major Windows update, which may be Windows 12, set to be released in 2024, based on leaked information.
