In it’s latest Windows 11 Insider build, Microsoft supports Passkeys-based authentication for eligible websites and apps, letting users securely log in to their services.
Big techs already embraced this new system in most of their products and it is more secure than the current password-based system – which is more prone to phishing attacks. Once you’ve created passkeys on eligible websites and apps, you can log into them with Windows Hello on the same device later.
Passkeys Login Via Windows Hello
Passwords are some of the sensitive information that we should protect, but we often leak them in silly ways. Phishing campaigns are ones where people unsuspiciously enter their password, leading to the compromise of their account.
Thus, big tech is now encouraging a new way of authenticating into their services – Passkeys, where users can log in without their regular passwords. Passkeys use the unique codes stored internally on the devices, like computers, tablets, or smartphones and enable you to log in through the device’s biometrics or PIN.
This is a safer method of accessing your account and also the fastest. Thus, Microsoft is now bringing this support to it’s Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23486, where users can make passwordless login into eligible websites and apps.
“Once a passkey is created, users can use Windows Hello (face, fingerprint, PIN) to sign in. In addition, users can use their phone to complete the application login process.”
As Microsoft noted, you should initially create a passkey on the desired website or app(they should support this method, too) and log in to it with passkeys-based Windows Hello afterwards. Some popular websites like bestbuy.com, ebay.com, or google.com, support passkeys already, where users can add them in their account settings.
On your Windows device, they’ll be stored in Settings > Accounts > Passkeys. You can always check the saved passkeys and delete the unnecessary ones anytime.
