WhatsApp is reportedly working on a chat-level authentication system – where users can lock some of their important chats with biometrics or passcode.
Locked chats would move into a new vault-like folder – so you have to unlock them once to access them all. Details on how many chats we can lock in this manner, or what happens to the notifications coming from such chats are still unknown.
Locking Chats With Biometrics
After all these years of promoting itself as the best privacy-focused messenger app, WhatsApp did not have an app-level and chat-level lock for securing important conversations! Users need to rely on OS-given settings or any third-party apps for this security.
Well, this all could be changing soon – as WaBetaInfo cited a new functionality in development, where users can lock their WhatsApp chats with biometrics and passcode. In the beta app version 2.23.8.2, WhatsApp is seen having a toggle to secure chats behind an authentication system.
Though the toggle for the fingerprint is now disabled, we may soon see it functioning. WaBetaInfo notes the chats locked with this support, move into a dedicated folder – which you can access by entering your set passcode or through fingerprint. A combination of both is recommended for being a failsafe method and easier access.
We’re yet to know how notifications from these chats will appear, how many chats of such are supposed to be stored and what happens to the media in these cases. As we wait to learn more about this, stay tuned to us for the latest information.
