WhatsApp is reportedly testing the ability to set usernames for accounts that give users unique identities on the platform.
This is similar to what we have on Telegram and keeps users’ identities more private since they can chat with unknown people through their usernames rather than exposing their phone numbers. This feature was spotted on the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS and may soon come to everyone.
Set Usernames for Unique Identity
One of the many random features WhatsApp has been testing lately is the ability to set usernames, where users can set a unique account name for easier identification. A similar feature has already been available on Telegram for a pretty long time and is now coming to WhatsApp.
This feature was spotted by WaBetaInfo on the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS v23.20.1.71, letting users set a distinguished username as desired. This will enable them to share their username with someone for initiating a chat instead of sharing their phone number, thus more privacy.
Available in the profile section, WhatsApp allows users to set any alphanumeric characters as their usernames, including some special characters, but not discriminators. It’s unknown how many times WhatsApp will let users change their username and when it’s going to introduce a username search.
As we wait, this feature is a much-needed addition to the platform, keeping users’ identities private in the community, especially in group chats. Also, chats initiated through usernames will be protected by end-to-end encryption.
