WhatsApp recently allowed some beta testers to try avatar-based video calling, which is more fun and secure.
Users video calling their friends with these personalised avatars will have their expressions mimicked in real-time, making the experience more realistic. While they can switch back to the original video anytime during the call, WhatsApp says the avatar-based video calls are end-to-end encrypted, too.
Avatar-based WhatsApp Video Calls
WhatsApp has been criticised for rolling out new features more slowly than it’s competitors, but the platform is innovating better than ever lately. The latest in this pursuit is the introduction of avatar-based video calls, which are more secure and fun.
Currently, WhatsApp allows users to make personalised avatars on the platform, which can be set as profile pictures and even sent as stickers in a chat. While it’s working on animated avatars to add more fun, WaBetaInfo reports the roll-out of avatar-based video calls to some beta testers.
As noted on WhatsApp beta for Android v2.23.19.14, users can find a new avatar option while in a video call – to instantly turn their face in the call to a personalised avatar that’ll mimic their expressions in real-time for being natural. Though the feature is reportedly available on WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.19.14, some may get it in v2.23.19.12 or v2.23.19.13, too, says WaBetaInfo.
While it’s fun to turn your original face into a graphic motion, this feature helps protect your identity if needed. While you can turn off the video on a call anytime, masking it with a relatable poster is a better option now.
WhatsApp says the video calls with live avatars are end-to-end encrypted, similar to original calls. While this feature is currently rolling out to some beta testers, WhatsApp may soon bring this to everyone on all the platforms.
