Twitter’s New ‘X’ Icon is Causing Troubles on Windows OS

Twitter’s icon rebranding is disturbing Windows users, as the social platform’s new X icon is being flagged as a security threat by Edge browser.

The change affects Twitter’s Progressive Web App on Windows OS, where browsers flag any suspicious change that PWAs make to their icon or name. Thus, users who see this warning alert are safe and don’t need to panic about the change.

Flagging Twitter’s PWA Change

Amidst lawsuits, delayed debt payments and ruckus over verified badges, Twitter continues to rebrand as per Elon Musk desires. As we waited to see how this new X branding would affect the company, the first hit was delivered by Microsoft through it’s Edge browser.

Few users running Twitter as a Progressive Web App(PWA) on Windows OS have been stirred by a warning this week – web app is trying to trick you” and you should uninstall it if you think it’s a different app. Well, this has nothing to do with Twitter’s credibility but a misunderstanding by one of the PWA’s settings.

For those of you who don’t know, a Progressive Web App(PWA) is a new-age software application built on web technologies to give a native app-like experience. Though based on a web browser, PWAs can bear their app icons, can be added to the device’s home screen or taskbar and can be launched automatically when a relevant file type is opened and more.

And since they’re web-based, they can be easily manipulated too. Thus, browsers like Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome have developed a default security feature to flag any suspicious changes to the PWA name or icon change.

And this specific setting is now flagging Twitter’s Unicode character X as a potential security threat to users! Well, in reality, it isn’t. So if your browser pops up a warning bell on Twitter’s icon change, don’t panic.
