TomTom, a famous GPS maker for cars, is adding an AI-powered voice assistant to it’s Digital Cockpit, that comes with popular infotainment systems in cars.
This would effectively let the drivers interact with their cars for various needs like navigation and other functions, handsfree. Based on Microsoft’s Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Cognitive abilities, the TomTom assistant will appear in future cars very soon.
TomTom’s AI Assistant in Cars
The Generative AI craze is quickly spreading to more gadgets, with cars being the latest to imbibe this technology through TomTom. Partnering with Microsoft, TomTom said it’s bringing a “fully integrated, AI-powered conversational automotive assistant” to cars soon.
The company’s GPS platform is integrated into various infotainment systems, so we should see the new assistant popping up anytime soon. While TomTom hasn’t announced any definitive partnerships, it may integrate the voice assistant into its Digital Cockpit – a proprietary modular in-vehicle infotainment platform.
When available, the “sophisticated voice interaction” should allow users to converse naturally for navigation, find stops along a route, control onboard systems, open windows and other functions. TomTom’s AI gains these capabilities from Microsoft’s Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Cognitive Services, which in turn uses OpenAI’s tech for delivering the functions.
TomTom is set to showcase it’s AI at CES in January, so we’ll know more about this soon. This isn’t the first time a car-related company has infused AI into a car but Mercedes in June added ChatGPT to select cars based on Azure OpenAI service.
