In a step towards supporting the fediverse ideology, the Threads app lets users verify themselves on Mastodon by sharing their profiles between both platforms.
A vice versa solution is unavailable as of now but Threads verified users can use their diverse links to prove themselves on other related platforms for authenticity. This aside, Threads is also working on a web client internally, so we may soon have this coming live for everyone.
Verification on Fediverse
Less than a month after it’s launch, the Threads app started supporting diverse ideologies by letting users verify their Threads profile on Mastodon. Meta makes this possible by adding support for “rel=me” links to the Threads platform to establish a relationship between two accounts by pointing links to each other.
If you’re a verified user on Threads, follow the below steps to verify your profile on Mastodon. Make sure to follow the order correctly.
- Add your Mastodon profile to your Threads profile.
- Add your Threads profile link to one of the “Extra fields” in your Mastodon profile.
- Hit Save.
Once done, you should see your Threads profile link on Mastodon surrounded by a green highlighted bar, along with a checkmark. A vice versa of this process – verifying your Mastodon profile on the Threads app is not available yet.
Well, this verification on Mastodon merely shows that you own the Threads profile and nothing else. But since the fediverse concept is supported by other decentralised networks, you can use this link to verify yourselves on those platforms, too, like Wikipedia, Gravatar and Flipboard.
This aside, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said they’re “fully committed to building support for ActivityPub” and the latest verification option is one of the “meaningful steps towards adopting open standards and diversification”.
Further, he said the company has also been using an “early version” of Threads on the web internally, hinting at it’s launch soon. This update comes a day after the Threads app added three new features, via the ability to send a post directly to Instagram DMs, mention someone in a bar and add custom alt text to images.
