Tecno has joined the ranks of smartphone manufacturers introducing flip-folding devices with the release of the Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G. This marks Tecno’s debut in the world of flip-folding devices, following their earlier launch of the Phantom V Fold folding device.
The newly unveiled device enters the competitive arena against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Oppo Find N3 Flip, Moto Razr and others. What sets it apart, however, is it’s affordability compared to it’s counterparts. Currently, the device has been launched in India with a price tag of Rs. 50,000, which translates to $600. Let’s delve into the detailed specifications of this intriguing device.
Specifications of the Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G:
On the rear side, the device boasts a cosmic 3D curved leather design that not only looks appealing but also feels comfortable in the hand. An intriguing feature on the rear side is the inclusion of a 1.32-inch AMOLED circular cover display, setting it apart from the rectangular or squarish cover displays commonly found on other flip-folding devices. Tecno has dubbed this unique cover display “The Planet” and it serves various functions, including displaying notifications, offering customized wallpapers and allowing users to set different widgets on the cover display.
This circular cover display is encircled by a ring housing a dual rear camera setup, referred to by Tecno as an “Asteroid Belt-Shaped” camera module. The device carries a weight of approximately 195 grams, making it the heaviest among it’s counterparts. When folded, it measures 14.95mm in thickness and when opened, it’s a slimmer 6.95mm. The bulkiness is largely attributed to it’s robust 4000 mAh battery, supporting 45W fast wired charging. Tecno claims that the included charger can charge the device up to 50% in just 15 minutes and achieve a full charge in a mere 45 minutes.
When unfolded, the device reveals a 6.9-inch FHD+ AMOLED flexible display with a pixel resolution of 2640*1080. This display panel operates at a smooth 120Hz LTPO refresh rate, dynamically adjusting between 10Hz to 120Hz based on the content displayed. The main display features a punch-hole cutout at the top center, accommodating the 32MP selfie shooter.
Powering the Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G is a MediaTek Dimensity 8050 5G chipset, which may not match the prowess of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found in the Galaxy Z Flip 5 but offers commendable day-to-day performance at this price point. Supporting the chipset are 8GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The device runs on HiOS 3.5 atop Android 13 out of the box. HiOS on this device comes equipped with it’s own AI assistant called “Ella”, featuring built-in ChatGPT.
In terms of cameras, a dual rear camera setup is nestled on the circular camera module surrounding the cover display. The primary sensor is 64MP with an f/1.7 aperture, accompanied by a 13MP ultra-wide sensor and a small LED ring flash.
The device’s hinge is adjustable and can be positioned at any angle between 30 degrees and 150 degrees, making it convenient for users to capture selfies using the rear cameras. Additionally, there is an option to take pictures through voice commands, simplifying the photography experience.
