One of the world’s biggest music streaming apps, Spotify, is now introducing educational video courses in the UK. There was a time when users went to different apps for various purposes, but now every platform is striving to fulfill multiple needs of users within a single app. Spotify, renowned for its music streaming services, is now offering educational video courses alongside music streaming and podcasts to attract more users and generate additional revenue. Besides music streaming, Spotify already offers podcasts and an audiobook lineup.

For this new service, the music streaming platform has collaborated with content providers, including Skillshare, BBC Maestro, PLAYvirtuoso, and Thinkific Labs Inc. Currently, the educational video content is categorized into four main sections: making music, fostering creativity, learning business skills and promoting healthy living.

In a blog post, Spotify said, “With this offer, we are exploring a potential opportunity to provide educational creators with a new audience who can access their video content, reaching a bigger potential swath of engaged Spotify users while expanding our catalog”. The music streaming platform reported that around half of it’s users have engaged with self-help or educational podcasts.

The new service is currently available to users in the UK, both free and premium subscribers alike. Initially, users can access two free lessons per course, after which they must decide whether to purchase the course, as the full course is behind a paywall. Regarding pricing, courses will range from £20($25) to £80($101) depending on the user’s subscription tier. These courses will be accessible across all platforms, including mobile devices, tablets and the Windows app. The service is presently in the testing phase and pricing may change once the service transitions from testing to an official release, especially in the UK.

The music streaming giant believes that educational video courses will provide creators with access to a broader audience, as an increasing number of individuals are opting for self-learning through video lectures on various platforms.

To access the full educational video courses on Android, users will receive an email link for payment. iPhone users must make payments through the web to access the courses on the platform. Currently, Spotify does not offer an in-app purchase option to avoid transaction fees imposed by Google and Apple for such purchases.
