Spotify this week added thousands of music videos in an effort to compete with Apple Music and YouTube Music, available in select countries.
The platform’s vice president said the initial regions were selected based on their market size and the availability of local content support, ranging from Brazil to Kenya, excluding the US. The option for music video streaming is available for Premium users only.
Music Video Streaming on Spotify
Being a market leader in audio streaming for so long, Spotify is now venturing into music videos by adding thousands of them this week. Available to premium subscribers in select countries, Spotify’s VP and global head of consumer experience – Sten Garmark, said the regions were chosen on a “number of criteria including market size and the availability of local content support”.
Thus, the initial launch is available in Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, Poland, Philippines, Sweden and the UK. While it’s surprising to see the US missing from the list, Spotify may gradually expand it’s support to more nations.
This beta program is available on mobile, desktop and TV clients of Spotify, from several tracks by artists like Ed Sheeran and Ice Spice. Interested premium users can try this by clicking on the “switch to video” option on the now-playing screen, while streaming a song.
Rumours of Spotify working on music videos started in July last year, with one Reddit user spotting the new option on a single song, My Way, by Limp Bizkit, three months ago. Spotify’s rivals, YouTube Music and Apple Music have had this option for a long time, and it’s well-received. So, it’s understandable why Spotify is jumping into it.
