Samsung is launching it’s Immersive Audio Model and Formats(IAMF) technology to eligible devices later this year, as confirmed to industry professionals at the CES 2024 event.
Touted as a new 3D audio format, IAMF will rival Dolby Atmos to offer users a rich-quality audio experience while streaming. Also, YouTube is preparing to roll out content that supports IAMF later this year.
Samsung’s 3D Audio Technology
Months after the announcement, Samsung has finally confirmed that it’ll roll out it’s Immersive Audio Model and Formats(IAMF) to eligible devices later this year. The new 3D audio format will come to TVs, soundbars and more, although the exact models are unknown.
Samsung says the addition will be brought via a firmware update to eligible models. This means the company offers it for free, unlike Dolby Atmos, which runs on royalties. OEMs are supposed to pay Dolby Atmos a royalty fee when it’s included in their products.
Thus, Samsung’s IAMF is a much better solution in this regard. Although, it’s unknown how the audio output will be compared to Dolby Atmos. Also, Samsung may change the IAMF branding to something more catchy and easy, at the time of rollout.
Furthermore, YouTube will roll out content that supports IAMF later this year, reported Android Authority. Well, this may be limited to YouTube mobile apps, as web browsers like Chrome support only the stereo output.
