Nearly a year after ChatGPT started the Generative AI race, Samsung showed up with it’s own AI model called Samsung Gauss – named after the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.
Made by the Samsung Research team, the Gauss model contains three products initially, viz Samsung Gauss Language, Gauss Code and Gauss Image – each having distinctive functions. While there’s no specific date when it’ll be available for Samsung fans, the company hinted at the launch of Galaxy S24 to pack its Gauss products for testing.
Samsung’s Native Generative AI
Though late, Samsung finally jumped onto the Generative AI bandwagon with it’s new Gauss model, announced at the Samsung AI Forum held this week at it’s R&D campus in Seoul, South Korea.
Samsung’s new Gauss model is named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who introduced the Normal Distribution Theory(Gaussian), touted as the backbone of AI and ML technologies. It’s set to be rolling out with the upcoming Galaxy S24 Series, scheduled to launch sometime early next year.
Developed by Samsung Research, Samsung Gauss is used by the company’s employees internally and will be available to the general public soon. The company has already announced three products based on it, the Samsung Gauss Language, Gauss Code and Gauss Image.
More specifically, the Samsung Gauss Language is similar to ChatGPT, which can understand human language and generate answers. From composing emails to summarising documents and translating languages, it does all. This model can even be applied to smarter device controls, cloud servers and endpoint devices, says Samsung.
The next up is Samsung Gauss Code, a model specializing in code languages—featuring a code assistant called ‘code.i’, this model is used for quick and easy software development and supports code description and test case generation.
And finally, there’s Samsung Gauss Image for creating and editing images. Like OpenAI’s Dall-E, you can create a new image from simple text inputs, and edit it in styles, convert low-resolution images to high-resolution and more.
All these products are designed to run on-device mode to protect private information. At the same time, the company has also constituted an AI Red Team to check privacy and security issues internally.
