Just as I mentioned yesterday, there are a number of special boot modes that come with Android devices. Today, we’ll continue focusing on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro. But this time I will be showing you how to boot the smartphone into Recovery mode in case you need to perform a factory reset or access TWRP.
Sadly, Xiaomi’s Recovery Mode has less features as stock Android’s version. The company makes this up in various ways but if you compare MI Recovery to Android’s stock recovery then you’re going to see a lot of missing features. So if you end up sticking with the Mi Recovery then you’ll have less features compared to TWRP.
We won’t be talking about TWRP much here, though. Although, if you have TWRP installed as your custom recovery then following the steps below will boot you into that instead of Mi Recovery.
In this guide I simply want to focus on the regular Mi Recovery that comes with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 as most people don’t feel the need to modify their smartphone. I do, and that’s why I like to teach people about it, but most people simply want to use their smartphone the way it comes from the factory.
In fact, it’s rare that Redmi Note 7 or Note 7 Pro owners will even need to boot their smartphone into Recovery Mode. But if you ever need to then you simply need to follow these steps.
Time needed: 3 minutes
How to Boot the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro into Recovery Mode
- Press and hold the Power button down until the Power Menu appears
- Tap the Power Off option
- Then tap the Power Off option again to shut down the Redmi Note 7
- Wait 3-5 seconds until the smartphone has completely shut down
- Now you need to press and hold both the Power and Volume Up buttons at the same time
- Continue holding these two buttons down until you feel the device vibrate
As soon as you feel the Redmi Note 7 vibrate, let go of the Power button
- Keep holding the Volume Up button down though until you boot into the Mi Recovery Main Menu
- Then you can let go of the Volume Up button
As mentioned, the images shown above in this tutorial are when you have the Mi Recovery on your smartphone. The menu options are minimal when compared to Android’s stock Recovery Mode but those additional features can be found in other places and/or in other ways.
If you’re using the regular Mi Recovery then you should know the touchscreen does not detect any inputs so you will need to use the Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power buttons to navigation through the menus. The Volume buttons allow you to highlight a specific option and then the Power button will select that option.
Redmi Note 7 Recovery Mode Menu
If you have imported a Chinese version of the Redmi Note 7 (or just have one with the China MIUI ROM installed) then your Mi Recovery will look similar to this. However, instead of the text being in English they will be in Chinese. The order and functions are exactly the same though so it’s easy to navigate through.
- Selecting the top option, labeled Reboot, will take you to a sub-menu where the new top option is labeled Reboot to System while the bottom option is labeled Back to Main Menu.
- Selecting the second option, labeled Wipe Data, will take you to another sub-menu where the new top option is labeled Wipe All Data and the bottom option is (again) labeled Back to Main Menu.
- Lastly, the bottom option says Connect with MiAssistant and this is used in conjunction with the Mi PC Suite application for various features. This feature is barely used as there are better options out there but I will cover this in a future tutorial anyway.
Since the touchscreen does not work in Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 Recovery mode then you will need to navigate through these menus using the Volume and Power buttons. Pressing the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons will highlight a specific option on the screen and pressing the power button will select that option.
If you have TWRP installed as your custom recovery then you can use the touchscreen just like you can when you’re in the Android operating system. Most basic recovery modes have limited the use of the touchscreen though so that’s something you’ll want to get used to.
Again, I’ll be discussing what we can do in Xiaomi’s Mi Recovery Mode on the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro in further detail in the future. Just like I will be discussing the features of the custom recovery TWRP when it has been installed on this smartphone as well.
The simple goal of this tutorial is to show you how to boot both into and out of Recovery Mode.
How to Exit Recovery Mode on the Redmi Note 7
So by following the instructions above, you have learned how to boot into this special boot mode on the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro. It should be relatively easy to boot out of Recovery Mode by following the menu options but the phrase “Reboot to System” doesn’t mean much to some people.
So for those who need a little nudge in the right direction, this is how you will boot out of the Redmi Note 7 Recovery Mode and back into MIUI or whatever Android custom ROM you’re currently using.
- Highlight the Reboot option (top option if you don’t understand the language)
- Press the Power button to select this option
- Highlight the Reboot to System option (top option again if there is a language barrier)
- And then press the Power button again to boot back into Android.
If you are using TWRP then you’ll do this by tapping the Reboot button at the bottom right and then tapping on the System option in the next menu.
