How to Boot the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 into Recovery Mode

The Redmi Note 5 Recovery Mode is yet another one of the many special boot modes that owners of the device should be aware of. I will be walking you through how to boot into Recovery Mode on this Xiaomi device so you can wipe data, connect to Mi Assistant, or even a custom recovery.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s tutorial, there are a number of different boot modes that Android has baked into their devices. Granted, Xiaomi handles things a bit differently and actually removes the easy to access way of booting into Safe Mode. Still, they have left a couple of things in place just like I showed you yesterday with how to boot the Redmi Note 5 into Fastboot Mode.

Today’s guide will walk you through the process that enables you to boot the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Plus, and Redmi Note 5 Pro into Recovery Mode.

Although, once again Xiaomi has changed how things are setup with their version of Mi Recovery. My Redmi Note 5 Pro has Mi Recovery 3.0 installed on it so other devices with other versions could be different than mine. At least when it comes to the Stock Recovery screen we have options that let us apply an OTA update via ADB, we can wipe the cache partition, and can even use it to boot over into Fastboot Mode. With the Xiaomi’s version of the Redmi Note 5 Recovery Mode though, we’re only allowed to wipe data or connect the device to Mi Assistant.

How to Boot the Redmi Note 5 into Recovery Mode

  1. Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds
  2. Tap the Power Off option when the Power Menu appears
  3. Tap the Power Off option again to confirm the action
  4. Then wait until the Redmi Note 5 shuts down
  5. When it’s off, press and hold the following buttons at the same time. . .
  6. Power, Volume Up
  7. . . .and continue holding these two buttons down during the splash screen
  8. Let these two buttons go when you see the Recovery Mode menu
  9. You may need to go back a menu tier to get to the main menu (optional)

Explanation

If you have every booted into Android’s stock recovery menu before then this whole process is likely familiar to you. Just like we did with the Redmi Note 5 Fastboot Mode tutorial, we need to start off by completely powering down the device. With that done, we can then press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button at the same time. You’ll likely see the Mi splash screen appear twice as the device actually reboots on its own the first time around. At least, that is what happened the few times I did this on my phone.

We want to continue holding these two buttons down through both of these splash screens though. You’ll eventually see it switch from the Mi splash screen to the main menu of Xiaomi’s Mi Recovery page. This is where you want to let go of these two buttons because you could end up forcing the device to reboot if you keep holding them down. Unless you release these buttons at exactly the same time (which is highly unlikely) then you may actually select one of these menu options by letting go of these two buttons.

Redmi Note 5 Recovery Mode Menu
This is the main menu of Xiaomi’s Mi Recovery 3.0 that is installed on the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Plus, and Redmi Note 5 Pro.

You can follow along with the video to get a  better idea of what I mean here. Each time I booted into the Redmi Note 5 Recovery Mode it actually sent me to a secondary menu as it thought I had selected one of the options. Thankfully though it is easy to back out of this by highlighting the Back to Main Menu option and then pressing the Power button to select it. That is another thing you should know about the Recovery Mode menu on the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Plus, and the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

When in this mode the touchscreen is disabled and you need to navigate the menus by using the Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down buttons. Just use the Volume Down buttons to move the highlighted/blue selector and then press the Power button when you want to choose the highlighted option. As mentioned, from here we can wipe the data on our device (which I’ll go into further detail later), we can connect the Redmi Note 5 Recovery Mode to Mi Assistant, or we can boot back into Android.
