Nearly a decade after it’s launch, Proton Mail has finally got a native desktop app for Windows and macOS, rolling out to legacy users early next year.
The new Proton Mail desktop app comes with Proton Calendar and a handful of new features to provide more flexibility for it’s users. Some include the ability to auto-forward emails between Proton Mail users, snoozing important emails with reminders, and attachment previews.
Proton Mail Desktop App With Calendar
Founded in 2014, Proton Mail expanded into various products besides it’s iconic encrypted email service, like VPNs, a password manager, a calendar and a cloud storage service called Proton Drive. But of all these, the company forgot to make a dedicated desktop app all these years – which is now being fulfilled.
Announcing it today(at the time of writing this), Proton Mail has added many new features to make it’s platform more helpful. The new Proton Mail desktop app is available directly from the Windows Start menu or MacOS dock and comes with the Proton Calendar bundled.
While we can still access Proton Mail through the web and “bridge” mode(via Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail), having a native app makes it more secure and more importantly – provides offline access to the emails.
We’re glad that Proton Inc. understood this need, as the tech giant Google forgot this with it’s Gmail. This aside, Proton Mail premium users can now auto-forward emails between Proton Mail accounts while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
There’s also a new “snooze” button to let users save essential emails for later reading, as they’ll be archived and reminded. Furthermore, we now have attachment previews to glimpse email attachments from the inbox without opening them fully.
All these features and the Proton Mail desktop app are available to Proton Visionary users – early adopters of the company’s products. While the Visionary Plan was closed long ago, the company is temporarily opening it today to add more users until January 3, 2024.
