Pixel 8 Series to Get 7 Years of Software Updates

Adding to the hype list of the upcoming Pixel 8 Series is a new tip from 91Mobiles that states the forthcoming handsets will support seven years of software updates!

While it’s unknown whether the 7-year period consists of Android and security updates or a mix of Android and then only security updates after a certain period, it’s good to know that Google is striving to serve their customers for an even longer period. If this turns out to be accurate, the Google Pixel 8 Series will be as good as iPhones in the long update policy race.

Pixel 8 Series Update Policy

Google’s native smartphone, the Pixel handset, excels in many things. While receiving software updates on priority is one among them, they’re not always the phones to receive updates for extended periods.

For example, Samsung started offering four years of Android and security updates to it’s Galaxy S21 and Z Flip/Fold 3 handsets in 2021. The Pixel handsets are given “5 years of Pixel updates”, which includes three years of Android updates followed by 24 months of security patches.

Well, this is all going to change, as a new report from 91Mobiles states that the upcoming Pixel 8 Series will get “Seven years of OS, security and Feature Drop updates”. This means the touted Pixel 8 Series’ can get seven years of both updates(Android and security) or the current system followed by Google, offering only the security updates after a 3-year Android update support.

While either systems are good, it’s embarrassing that Google’s smartphones don’t have the best update policy in the Android ecosystem, till now. But with the upcoming change, other Android OEMs may change their update policy to more extended periods.

Well, the big question here is – whether anyone would like to use the phone until then. We know Pixel phones with Snapdragon chips are durable, but we don’t know much about the Tensor chips.

As we hope to see it working even better in the long run, maintaining a phone until then is very much possible, provided that spare parts will be made available, according to new laws formed by US states.
