The OnePlus 6 does come with a notch at the top of the display but OxygenOS has a feature that lets us hide it if you would rather not see it all the time.
The new slim bezel designs that we’ve seen lately have been hit or miss within the community this year. Some people enjoy it and want to slim the bezels down as much as possible and anywhere that’s possible. While others dislike the new design as it doesn’t look the way they would prefer it to look. Personally, I am hit or miss in this area as I don’t think there needs to be a notch at all.
OEMs should be able to just keep the top bezel slim enough to look nice while also be thick enough to hold the hardware we need.
This is where OnePlus has stepped in an attempt to give us the best of both worlds. By default you will notice that the screen will go up all the way to the left and right corners at the top of the display. This will let you see more of the screen but it will also have the notch sticking into the display and cutting off anything that would be there. The software does prevent it from cutting off parts of the video in certain applications but the presence of the notch itself can be distracting to some people.
So let me show you how this OxygenOS feature works to hide the notch display of the OnePlus 6.

- Open up the Settings application
- Scroll down to the Device section
- Tap on the Display option
- Look for the Notch section
- Then tap on the Notch Display option
- And finally tap the Hide the Notch Area option
Explanation
Just like with most software features, the ability to customize the OnePlus 6 notch display area is purely cosmetic and is simply a personal preference. Setting it to one way or the other will not have any negative effects with anything else on the phone. As I mentioned, it just depends on if you want to see the display reach up and over both side of the notch. I can understand that this gives a sense of immersion but I can also see how this would be distracting in certain circumstances.
Although, OnePlus has taken this feature a step further and will even let you set custom rules for various applications but I’ll be getting into that in a future guide. Today I just wanted to show you that the feature is there in OxygenOS and how it will change things up. So to start, you want to launch the Settings application and then scroll down a bit. Once you get to the Device section look for and tap on the Display option as this is where the OnePlus 6 Notch features are tucked away.
You’ll see an entire section dedicated to the Notch and in there will be an option called the Notch Display. Tap on this and you’ll be taken to another screen where you can choose between the two options. By default this feature is set to Show the Notch Area and that is why we see the wallpaper wrapping around the notch at the top of the screen. However, if we tap on the Hide the Notch Area option then you should see a top black bar appear at the top of the screen that connects the OnePlus 6 notch to the side bezels of the phone.
You will still have the Status Bar icons sitting in that black bar area which I have to say is nice since it helps us to save some space. However, I will say that I still dislike clock sitting on the left side of the Status Bar. As you can see here though, we can hide or show this notch area at any time and it only takes us going into the Settings application and switching one of the options.
