Whether you’re looking to boot into stock or a custom recovery like TWRP, you can follow these steps to boot into the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T Recovery Mode menu.
Android’s Stock Recovery mode allows for a number of different features such as installing an OTA update from either the internal storage or via ADB. It gives us the ability to wipe the cache partition, do a factory reset, and even an alternative way to boot into Android’s special Fastboot Mode.
While the stock recovery is rather limited, the process to boot into it is the same no matter if you’re using a stock recovery or if you’re using something like TWRP.
These features can be vital if you want to manually update your device, or for some reason can’t boot into Android. Whatever the case may be, today I’m going to walk you through a couple of different ways on how to boot into the OnePlus 5 Recovery Mode. One will be detailed in the step by step guide right below here, but then I’ll talk about an alternative method toward the end of the Explanation part. Both will functionally work the same though.
OnePlus 5 Recovery Mode
- Power down the OnePlus 5
- Wait until the device is completely off
- Then press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time
- Continue holding these two buttons during the initial OnePlus splash screen
- When the OnePlus logo goes away, you can let go of these two buttons
- And then wait until the OnePlus 5 boots into Recovery Mode
Explanation
The process of booting into Recovery Mode on an Android device is generally the same among different models from the same company. So if you have owned any of the previous OnePlus devices then the process will likely be the same here. Even most OEMs will have the same method of booting into this special boot mode. The only reason why I detail them out in individual articles is so the reader is confident in how to boot into the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T Recovery Mode.
So to start, you’ll need to power down the device completely. Just do this the regular way by holding down the Power button and waiting for the Power Menu to appear. Then tap the Power Off option that appears on the screen and then tap the same red button again. This will start shutting down the OnePlus 5 and then you can proceed with Step 3 of the guide above. This requires you to hold down both the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.
Continue holding these 2 buttons down until the initial OnePlus splash screen goes away. If you’re confused on this part then watch the video above as I walk you through the entire process. As soon as that OnePlus logo goes away, you can let go of these two buttons. Then wait a second or two and you’ll be booted into the OnePlus 5 Recovery Mode that you have installed (whether that is stock or TWRP). You can then either use the Volume/Power buttons to navigate the menu, or even just tap the option you want on the screen.
If you find that you have tapped or selected the wrong option, you can simply tap on the right capacitive button next to the Home button and that will take you back to the previous menu. This is useful if you accidentally selected the wrong language at the start. When you’re done with his special boot mode, you can tap on the Exit option and then tell the OnePlus 5 to restart. This will boot you back into the regular Android OS just I did in the video.
Alternatively, you can enable the Advanced Reboot option from within the Developer Options menu after you have enabled Developer Mode on the OnePlus 5. This will add a ‘reboot into recovery mode’ option in the standard Power Menu so you don’t have to go through the whole button combination method.
Hi,
I attempted to follow your above tutorial, and I looked at your video too.
But after pressing Down Volume+Power, a keyboard was displayed and to go ahead it was necessary to
give the unlocking password.
The point is that I intended to launch recovery mode, precisely because I forgot my unlock password (I have been using the fingerprint unlocking method for months and when I started to make a phone restart for the first time after some months I found out I forgot the code, yes it is silly but…).
Under the displayed keyboard there is a “Forget password” option, for the time being I dared not click it…
Any idea or suggestion ?
Thanks.
