If you’re willing to use a custom launcher, or install an Xposed Module, then you can enable Double Tap to Sleep on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.
It was a couple of days ago that I showed you a different double tap gesture for the OnePlus 3. That tutorial showed you how to enable Double Tap to Wake on the OnePlus 3 and in that guide I told you that it’s also possible to enable Double Tap to Sleep as well. While the Double Tap to Sleep feature is embedded within the core OxygenOS software, sadly they chose to not include the Double Tap to Sleep feature.
So we have to come up with a workaround to get this feature working on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.
There are two different ways of doing this and I’m going to go over both of them here today. The first method will show you how to set it up using Nova Launcher (which requires the premium version) and it does not require that you root the OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T. So if you don’t want to root your smartphone then you should opt for this method.
If you don’t mind having root, and you don’t mind installing Xposed Framework on the OnePlus 3 (or already have it installed), then I can show you a different method. This method is free, but it requires that you have the GravityBox Xposed Module installed so you can enable it. Each methods mentioned today have their own unique take on this Double Tap to Sleep feature for the OnePlus 3 so be sure to check the video below to find out which is best for you.
Note – You can also customize the OnePlus 3 hardware buttons to sleep the device.
OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Sleep with Nova
- Download and Install Nova Launcher and Nova Launcher Prime
- Launch the Settings application
- Tap on the ‘Home’ option
- Tap on the ‘Nova Launcher’ option
- Then press the Home button
- Launch the Nova Settings application
- Tap on the ‘Gestures & Inputs’ option
- Scroll down and tap on the ‘Double Tap’ option
- Then tap on the ‘Screen Lock’ option
OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Sleep with Xposed
- Unlock the bootloader of the OnePlus 3
- Install TWRP on the OnePlus 3
- Root the OnePlus 3
- Install Xposed Framework on the OnePlus 3
- Install and activate the GravityBox Xposed Module on the OnePlus 3
- Launch the GravityBox companion application
- Tap on the ‘Statusbar Tweaks’ option
- Scroll down and tap the ‘Disable Peek’ option
- Then tap on the ‘Double Tap to Sleep’ option to enable it
Explanation
I went ahead and showed both methods in the video above, so if you’re opting for one method over the other (even though doing both methods would give you more options) then you can ignore the other half of the video. The first method I discuss is with Nova Launcher Prime and this method does not require root access, however, it does require that you pay for the premium version of Nova Launcher (which is worth it if you like the launcher).
Once it is installed, you’ll need to switch to Nova Launcher by going into the Settings application of the OnePlus 3. Then tap on the Home option from within the settings menu and then select the Nova Launcher option in the launcher list. From here, you can tap on the Home button to go back to the Home Screen and then you can dive into the Nova Settings application to start configuring this feature.
With Nova Settings open, scroll down and tap on the Gestures & Inputs option, then look for and tap on the Double Tap gesture in this list. This lets you configure Nova Launcher to do any number of tasks from the Double Tap gesture but today we’re going to focus on the Screen Lock option. Tap on the Screen Lock option and then press the Home button to go back to the Home Screen. Now you can double tap on an empty spot of the Home Screen and you’ll get a dialog box.
Simply tap on the Enable button at the bottom right to agree to this change. You’ll then be taken to a permission page where you’ll see an Activate button at the bottom right. Tapping on this button will complete the OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Sleep setup for Nova Launcher. You can then press the Home button to go back to the Home Screen and then try out your new Double Tap to Sleep feature.
Next up we have the Xposed Module method for setting up the OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Sleep feature. As mentioned in the guide above, you will need to do things like unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, gain root access and install both Xposed Framework as well as the GravityBox Xposed Module. Once all of that is done and you’ve activated the module and restarted the OnePlus 3, then we can begin to configure this method.
Once the OnePlus 3 has been rebooted (after activating the GravityBox Xposed Module), you can then launch the companion application for this module. From here, look for and tap on the Statusbar Tweaks option and then scroll all the way down to the bottom. You’ll see the Double Tap to Sleep option here, but it’s grayed out at first. You’ll need to tap on and enable the Disable Peek option and then you can tap on and enable the OnePlus 3 Double Tap to Sleep option.
With this option enabled, you can immediately test out the double tap to sleep feature by double tapping on any spot of the Status Bar. You can do this from any application you want as there are no restrictions here. If you can see and tap on the Status Bar, then you can use the double tap to sleep gesture to lock the OnePlus 3.
