How to Disable Doze Mode on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

You can turn off Doze mode entirely on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T if apps are having trouble running and delivering notifications in the background.

Doze mode was introduced into Android by Google and it helped solve a lot of battery life issues people were having with their devices. The big example they used to explain this feature was with a tablet. Generally, a tablet will sit somewhere for the majority of the day and then you’ll pick it up and use it for an hour or two after work, after dinner, etcetera.

So it doesn’t make sense for this tablet to actively let applications run in the background while you’re at work and won’t be actively using it.

So Doze mode will monitor how you use your smartphone and tablet devices. It will see when you’re actively using them and when they are normally not in use. So during those times when Android knows you’re not using the device, it will kick on Doze mode for you. This will prevent applications from running and syncing in the background, and can help save you a decent amount of idle battery life. But as you can see, Doze mode can impact the delivery of notifications and close apps that are running in the background.

So for those who are having trouble receiving notifications or having applications killed in the background (when you don’t want them to), let me show you how to turn off Doze mode on the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T.

Disabling Doze on the OnePlus 3

  1. Enable Developer Mode on the OnePlus 3 & 3T
  2. Launch the Settings application
  3. Tap on the Developer Options option at the bottom
  4. Scroll down a bit and toggle the Doze Mode feature off
  5. Then tap on the Home button to go back to the Home Screen

Explanation

There is definitely a give and a take here with Android’s Doze mode and that’s just how things are with the platform. You can’t let applications have all the control and expect battery life to be great. So if you’re wanting more battery life then you have to sacrifice some functionality of your applications. Google has a job scheduler API so that notifications for all your apps can come through at once, which reduces battery consumption compared to each app waking up the device when it wants to receive a notification.

But again, this can cause some people to have trouble receiving notifications or even just letting an application run in the background. So if this is the case for you, then you may want to consider giving up some of the idle battery life you have in order to let those apps have more control of your OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T. In other version of Android, we can disable Doze on the OnePlus 3 for individual applications, but with OxygenOS we only have the option to disable and enable Doze system wide.

Developer Mode Options
You’ll need to have Developer Mode enabled in order to turn Doze mode on or off.

So to start, you will need to have Developer Mode enabled and if you aren’t sure how that is done then click the link in step 1 of the guide above. Once you have the Developer Options option available in the Settings application, you can go in there and look for the Doze Mode feature. It has a simple toggle that you can turn off and on (it’s turned on by default) and this is how you control Doze mode on the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T.

So all you have to do is toggle this feature off and then tap on the Home button to go back to the Home Screen. Doze mode should be disabled on your phone now and it should resolve any issues you’re having with applications not delivering notifications in a timely manner. This can also help to resolve times when Android is killing an application in the background too.
