Microsoft Notepad, a preinstalled application on the Windows operating system, offers basic text writing and editing features. With the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft is introducing significant updates to it’s proprietary apps, including a new design reminiscent of the Windows 11 aesthetic.
Now, Microsoft is enhancing it’s Notepad app with a feature that simplifies writing and editing, particularly for users without Microsoft Word installed on their Windows machines.
Microsoft is introducing a spellcheck feature to it’s Notepad app on Windows 11. Although the feature is currently in development and available for developers to test, it will be globally rolled out to all Notepad users later this year.
As the name suggests, spellcheck functions similarly to the feature found on Microsoft Word or within the Microsoft Edge browser. With this addition, misspelled words will automatically be underlined in red, allowing users to right-click on them to choose the correct word from suggested alternatives, akin to Microsoft Word. Additionally, an autocorrect feature will automatically fix spelling mistakes as users continue writing. This spellcheck feature will support multiple languages and users can also choose to ignore words flagged by Notepad and add them to the dictionary if they believe the word is correct despite the error indication.
In a blog post, Dave Grochocki, principal product manager lead for Windows Inbox Apps says, “This feature is enabled by default for some file types but is off by default in log files and other file types typically associated with coding. You can toggle this setting on or off globally or for certain file types within the Notepad app settings or temporarily for the current file in the context menu”.
Spellcheck is among the many features Microsoft plans to introduce to the Notepad app. In December of last year, the software giant announced it’s intention to incorporate a character count feature to it’s word editor app.
