Netflix is Rolling Out ‘Sub-Accounts’ Feature for a Slightly Higher Price

Months after testing in Latin America, Netflix is finally bringing it’s Sub-Accounts feature to four new countries – Canada, Portugal, New Zealand and Spain now.

Under this, users are officially allowed to share their account with up to two others by paying a slightly higher fee than their Standard Plan. This comes after a long-standing warning from the company to crack down on the illegal password-sharing practices by over 100 million users across the globe.

At last, Netflix is finally enforcing the warning it has long been preaching – cracking down on password-sharing practices. Though the company intentionally allowed this to happen for a very long time, it started taking it seriously after losing millions of subscribers early last year.

This led management to reconsider their flexibility and launch measures to stop subscribers from sharing their accounts. One among them is the recent introduction of the “Basic With Ads” tier, which offers limited Netflix content with ads for a slightly lower price.

And now, the company is finally banning the practice of password sharing by blocking unknown users from accessing an actual account. And this is by introducing the Sub-Accounts feature, where Netflix asks subscribers to pay more for sharing their accounts legally!

The company has been testing this feature for several months now and now is rolling it out to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. Users in these countries can pay an additional C$8 a month in Canada, NZ$8 in New Zealand, 4 euros in Portugal, and 6 euros in Spain to create sub-accounts for up to two people.

Thus, sharing them with anyone outside is legal. While setting up, the platform asks users to mention a primary location – so anyone accessing the account from other than the mentioned region will automatically be blocked. Well, Netflix may hopefully also have the plan to allow genuine subscribers access their accounts when traveling elsewhere.

All these sub-accounts come with their own personalized recommendations attached to the profile and login credentials and for users who don’t want to stick to others’ accounts, they can migrate their profile data to their own Netflix account (if one is made) through a Profile Transfer tool.
