Minecraft, at it’s Live 2023 event this week, announced hitting a 300-million sales mark, a milestone that makes it the most selling game of all time.
This aside, the event also announced a host of new features coming to the 3D sandbox game via it’s v1.21 update, scheduled sometime next year. Some include a Crafter, Trail Spawner, Copper Bulb, etc.
The Best Video Game Selling Figures
While we know Minecraft is a popular online 3D sandbox game, do we know how prevalent it is? Well, the game developer Mojang Studios, at it’s Minecraft Live 2023 event, revealed that it has sold over 300 million copies worldwide.
Announcing this on it’s 15th anniversary, Mojang Studios head Helen Chiang said It’s “a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks.” No other title in this industry has reached at least the 200-million mark, putting Minecraft safe at the top spot for the next few years. For instance, the next best game – Grand Theft Auto V, has sold 185 million copies, which is not even close to Minecraft.
Comparing it to others, Sony’s PS2 console was sold around 155 million units and the bestselling album Thriller has sold around 70 million copies. All these put Minecraft at the top of the table across any category, at least for the next few years.
This aside, the hosts also announced Minecraft’s Star Wars: Path of the Jedi DLC, coming to the in-game marketplace on 7th November. This will allow players to rise through the ranks from Padawan to Jedi Knight. Also, the mob voting for the new creature is selected as an armadillo, amongst the crab and a penguin.
We could see this character arriving in the Minecraft v1.21 update, which includes a new Crafter – for automating the craft in the game. Further, there’s a new Trial Spawner to let players spawn a specified target count of mob based on a timer. And finally, there’s a new Copper Bulb that emits light depending on it’s oxidation stage, with more oxidation meaning less light.
