Microsoft has announced that it is discontinuing WordPad for Windows and the app will no longer be part of future Windows updates. Microsoft introduced WordPad with Windows 95, nearly 30 years ago and since then WordPad has been part of every Windows version that has released.
Microsoft now recommends it’s users to use MS Word which is a paid tool from and has more features than WordPad which just offers simple document writing with no additional options to customize documents like MS Word does.
In it’s support note published on it’s website, Microsoft says, “WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt”.
Another free utility that comes with WordPad on every Windows is Notepad and Microsoft announced earlier that it is updating Notepad with new features such as autosave and automatic restoral of tabs.
Notepad first got a makeover in 2018 with a Windows update after ages and with Windows 11, the software giant updated the app again and introduced tabs features. On the other hand, WordPad did not get much attention as the Notepad does. The free word processor from Microsoft got it’s first update after years with the release of Windows 7 back in 2009. In that update, the software giant introduced the ribbon UI of Windows 7 on the WordPad. After that, the app got a slight UI update with the release of Windows 8 and since then the app has not been updated once, even with the release of Windows 10 and 11. Till now, the app remains the same as it came with Windows 8.
Now, Microsoft has announced that the app will be removed from Windows completely with the future release. The upcoming Windows version will most likely be Windows 12 which might release in 2024 with AI-powered features and the world is adopting AI rapidly. And with this announcement, WordPad will not be a part of Windows 12.
