An accidental leak by a senior manager at Twitter revealed that Microsoft is adding Tabs support to the Notepad app on Windows 11.
Though the tweet update was deleted soon after, it’s evident that Microsoft is working on it, and we may soon see this feature going live early next year. When live, Windows 11 users can open and work on multiple files in one Notepad app, placed in individual tabs.
Tabs in Windows 11 Notepad App
To let users work on multiple files on a single application, Microsoft launched Tabs support for File Explorer earlier this year. This feature on Windows 11 has helped many power users to streamline their work, who would otherwise be forced to use third-party apps for multiple tabs support.
Since it’s helpful, Microsoft is now bringing the same to it’s Notepad app on Windows 11 – as reported by a senior product manager on Twitter. Though he deleted the tweet shortly after posting, revealing it, enthusiasts wished they had got a glimpse of this feature.
As per the shared screenshot, Microsoft tagged an internal warning as “Confidential Don’t discuss features or take screenshots” of the feature, but it was accidentally shared anyhow. Well, this reminds us that the rollout of Tabs on Notepad is nearing and probably be coming to Office Insiders early next year.
When available, users can open multiple files in their native Notepad app to work seamlessly without any external integrations. If it’s bug-free when launched, Microsoft will add the same Tabs support to all of it’s native apps gradually.
The company worked on a similar feature called Sets a few years ago but shelved it eventually. Back then, all the native apps like File Explorer and Notepad had been briefly tested with tabs support on Windows 10.
