Microsoft added a dedicated Copilot key to the upcoming keyboards on Windows OS, that will invoke the AI chatbot instantly for your assistance.
The new keyboard with the Copilot key will be shown at the CES 2024 event, where the dedicated button will appear between the right Alt key and the left arrow key, presumably replacing the Control key. This is a significant change Microsoft is making to keyboards in nearly three decades.
Dedicated Switch to Invoke Copilot
Proving that it’s entirely into the AI craze, Microsoft is planning to add a dedicated keyboard switch to invoke it’s Copilot in the Windows OS. This special key is set to appear between the right Alt key and the left arrow key, where we have Control and Function keys now.
Hopefully, the new Copilot button may replace the right Control key, considering most won’t use it. Keyboards with the dedicated Copilot key will be showcased in the upcoming CES event scheduled next week. Talking about this, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and consumer Chief Marketing Officer, Yusuf Mehdi, said,
“We believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily. The Copilot key joins the Windows key as a core part of the PC keyboard, and when pressed, the new key will invoke the Copilot in THE Windows experience to make it seamless to engage THE Copilot in your DAY-TO-DAY.”
In areas where Microsoft Copilot is not available, the unique key will launch Windows Search. And for old keyboards, they’ll continue to function as usual but you can add a Copilot shortcut if your keyboard supports key mapping.
This is a significant update in three decades made to the regular PC keyboards and all Microsoft OEMs may follow it. The Redmond company also relies on it’s chip partners – AMD and Intel, to bear some of the AI burden passed out by it’s Copilot.
