Meta has launched their Threads app, a text-based app, last week. It directly competes with Twitter and operates similarly. Leveraging Instagram’s extensive user base, Threads app gained 100 million users in just five days, making it the fastest app to reach this milestone.
The app is currently available worldwide for all users on iOS and Android, except those in the European Union due to strict data sharing laws. Being new, as it was released just six days ago, Threads lacks many useful and interesting features which are already present on other social media apps, particularly Twitter.
However, several new features are in the works and will gradually be added to the app, especially on Android. If you are an Android user, you may be fortunate as Meta has started to enroll users onto the Threads app beta program, which you can join through the Google Play Store.
In the beta program, you can update to the beta version of the app and test out some features that are still in development, exclusively available to beta users. One thing to consider before joining the beta program is that the beta version of the app may be unstable and might contain bugs that can affect the user experience. Nevertheless, in most cases, it works perfectly fine, so if you are thinking of joining the beta program, you can do so as the app’s user experience is generally good.
Some of the new features currently in development include access to a feed that displays content from the accounts you follow. This is the same feature already available on the Twitter app, where you have two tabs at the top. One tab is labeled “For You”, where you see content based on your interests and connections. The other tab is labeled “Following”, where you will find tweets from only the accounts you follow.
One highly anticipated feature is the option to delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account. Currently, the Threads app is linked to your Instagram account, and there is no way to delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account as well. However, this feature is under development and will soon be rolled out to all users. Currently, you can only disable your Threads account temporarily, but permanent deletion is not possible without deleting your Instagram account.
Other Twitter features, such as hashtags, post-editing, multiple accounts, translations and post search, are also in development and will be available soon on the new app. With most of these features being in development, Threads will become an independent and fully functional social media app.
