Hours before the scheduled launch, Meta rolled out it’s new Threads platform globally today – available on the web, iOS and Android.
The new app allows users to post texts of up to 500 characters, images and videos for up to five minutes. Though, intriguingly, Meta didn’t add the DMs option, the company may eventually bring Stories, stickers, ads etc, to Threads, and since it’s tagged to Instagram, it’s easy for people and the company to form circles quickly.
A New Social Media App From Meta
After teasing for months, Meta has finally rolled out it’s Twitter-rival app called Threads today. Earlier this week, the company listed Threads on the App Store and said it’ll be available to everyone on Thursday.
But hours before the clock ticked to the said deadline, Meta made the Threads app available to everyone, except in the EU – to possibly address any regulatory concerns. Well, people can always use VPNs to get through and experience the new app – which seems more like Twitter.
With Twitter’s UI and Instagram’s aesthetics, the Threads app is touted as a “separate space for real-time updates and public conversations”. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has already said the new app crossed 10 million sign-ups in the first seven hours of launch and is attracting users rapidly.
Thanks to it’s Instagram integration, people can sign-up for Threads with their Instagram credentials. Though the app carries over all your Instagram profile info, you can customise it anytime, later. Once in, you can post a text update of up to 500 characters, images and videos of up to five minutes.
You can like, repost, quote posts and flag abusive users or content, while also limiting replies to your posts. Meta says the app is built on ActivityPub, a decentralised protocol that powers Mastodon, so users can easily view and connect to people on other similar platforms, soon.
