Years after serving the resource-constraint devices, Meta will shut down the Messenger Lite app on September 18th, 2023.
While the company didn’t state a specific reason, it directed them to try the Messenger app to keep communicating with their friends. Shutting down the Lite app won’t affect your chats, assures Meta, while removing the app from Play Store to bar new installs.
The demise of the Messenger Lite App
Understanding that not all smartphones have huge RAM, Meta crafted a lite version of it’s Facebook Messenger in 2016 – Messenger Lite. For years, this has been the standard platform for many Facebook and non-Facebook users to communicate since it lets users sign up without a Facebook account.
Moreover, Meta tuned it’s Messenger to an all-in-one app by adding support for SMS. Well, all these are deprecating now, as Meta is killing support for SMS and the Messenger Lite app altogether next month. Some users reported seeing a full-screen prompt informing them of Messenger Lite’s shutdown, with the date as September 18th.
Assuring this move doesn’t impact their chats, Meta asks users to try the actual Messenger app instead. Further, the company removed the Messenger Lite app from the Google Play Store to block new installs. Current users may access the app’s page on Play Store, but no updates will be passed in the future.
As for why Meta will be shutting down the Lite app, it’s unknown but watching the current trend of most people using a fairly resourceful smartphone, Meta thinks focusing more on the actual Messenger app is worthy, thus pushing users towards it.
