Meta is reportedly crafting an ad-free plan for EU users that will let them access ad-free content across Facebook and Instagram and also allow Meta to comply with most of their norms.
The plan’s priced at €10 a month for those subscribing through desktop and around €13 if subscribing through mobile apps. A Meta spokesperson has confirmed this to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported this.
An Ad-Free Access to Facebook and Instagram
To tackle the ever-growing regulations in the EU, Meta is reportedly working on an ad-free subscription for local users for €10 a month. As noted by The Wall Street Journal, the subscription will allow EU users to access Facebook and Twitter without any ads while also reducing the legal norms to be followed by Meta in this region.
Earlier this year, Meta was fined €390 million by Ireland’s Data Privacy Commissioner for using the so-called “contract” legal basis to send users ads based on their online activity. Meta eventually said it intended to seek permission from the EU users before directing targeted advertisement, which would address the evolving regulatory requirements in the region.
Accordingly, it’s now testing an ad-free plan for €10 in the EU to let subscribers access Facebook and Instagram without ads. If not, users are asked to accept Meta’s targeted ads policy, which complies with all the relevant data collection practices.
While there’s no news on when we can see this ad-free tier, The Wall Street Journal reports that it costs €10 a month per account and an additional €6 for each other linked account, also, the subscription would cost around €13 if subscribed through mobile apps, factoring in the charges levied by Apple and Google’s respective app stores.
Meta’s rival, TikTok, is also testing a similar ad-free plan for $4.99 monthly in the US to let users stream the platform content without ads. Otherwise, they can continue to access the platform with personalised ads.
