After trailing for a couple of months, Lyft is expanding it’s Women Plus Connect feature across the US, letting female and non-binary riders find their alike drivers.
Lyft hopes this feature increases safety among female and non-binary users, who are often subject to sexual harassment incidents. Since it’s launch, Lyft says over 2.4 million riders have enabled the Women Plus Connect option in their app.
Choose the Type of Lyft Rider You Want
Amongst the debate of identifying riders as full-time employees, Lyft is also tangled with sexual harassment complaints from both it’s riders and users, especially from women and non-binary people. This led the company to introduce a Women Plus Connect feature from last year, now expanding to everyone in the US.
When turned on, the feature will let women and non-binary drivers find women and non-binary riders, and vice versa, which may make them feel safe. Lyft says over 2.4 million riders have activated this feature since it’s rollout, which also aims to recruit more women riders.
And if there are no nearby passengers matching the rider’s profile, the app will match with a male passenger, eventually. While it’s an excellent feature to try out, only 23% of Lyft’s driver workforce identify as women or non-binary.
Anyhow, with today’s wider rollout, Lyft hopes more women and non-binary riders may opt for this feature of their interest. Women Plus Connect will be available to all Lyft riders and drivers who have selected the women or non-binary gender setting.
Once opted, Lyft will determine who is eligible based on the gender marker on the driver’s license, but drivers can also update their gender settings on the app later on.
