By default, LG puts 3rd-party application icons inside a rounded square, but you can disable this feature by following the step by step guide below.
The style of icons we use and prefer can very from person to person. A number of people like the traditional and unique icons that each application comes with. It helps them to distinguish one application icon from another since they know what to look for. Other people actually like their application icons to be themed so they look similar to each other.
This is traditionally done with custom icon packs, but LG has added its own solution to the LG G6.
If you don’t touch any of the application settings, the LG G6 Rounded Square icon style will be set automatically. This means that any 3rd-party application you install will have its icon shrunk and placed inside a gray rounded square shaped icon. This is nice if you want all of your application icons to have a similar style but not everyone likes that. Some don’t like how the rounded square icon looks and others just want to have the traditional icons used.
So today I’m going to walk you through how to disable and enable this feature from within the LG G6.
LG G6 Rounded Square Icons
- Launch the Settings application
- Tap on the Display option at the top right of the screen
- Tap on the Home Screen option
- Look in the Style section
- Then tap on the Icon Shape option
- Choose if you want disable rounded square icons (original) or if you want to keep the rounded square icons
- Then tap on the OK button at the bottom right
Explanation
There isn’t a right or wrong option to choose here since the style of icons is a personal preference. I just want you to be made aware of the feature so you know that the option is there to change it to how you want. However, the change isn’t made to every single application icon. As you can see at the top of this guide, the image shows you what the LG G6 Rounded Square icon style looks like. Then, if you look at the image below you’ll be able to see how it looks when the feature is disabled.
So in the examples, you can see the Google Chrome and Google Maps icons both change when you switch this style. This is how it will be for all of your 3rd-party applications you have downloaded from the Play Store as well. But nothing has changed with the default LG application icons since that is the style they chose to go with. I don’t know why LG didn’t provide two full icon sets for their default applications as this seems like something that could be fixed easily.
So to change the icon shape on the LG G6, you’ll want to launch the Settings application and then tap on the Display tab at the top right. From here, look for and tap on the Home Screen option and then we want to find the Style section of the next menu. It should be the second section on the page and there will be an option here labeled Icon Shape. Go ahead and tap on that option and it will take you to the page where you can change the style.
By default, it will be set to rounded square, but you can change it to the original style with a simple tap. You’re even given a demo preview of the changes right at the top of the page. When you are ready to settle on an icon shape for your LG G6, go ahead and tap on the OK button at the bottom right of the screen. This will take you back to the Settings application and from here you can tap on the Home button to go back to the Home Screen and see your changes.
If you want to really change things up, you can install an application like Nova Launcher and really change the style of icons you have on the Home Screen.
