How to Enable Ringtone ID on the LG G6 and G6+

Ringtone ID on the LG G6 and G6+ lets you customize the ringtones used when someone calls you, and you can enable this feature by following these steps.

LG introduced the Ringtone ID feature a year or two ago with the release of one of their flagship smartphones. With this feature enabled, people who call you are automatically assigned a uniquely created ringtone. This is quite handy as it allows you to learn the ringtone over time so you know who is calling without you needing to look at the phone and check the caller ID.

Now, Android smartphones have had the ability to manually set ringtones for a while.

However, it’s the automatic nature of the LG G6 Ringtone ID feature that makes it so convenient. Assuming you are happy with the types of ringtones LG is creating for you with this feature, then it’s something that you just turn on and never have to tinker with again. Once enabled, you will then just need to learn which unique ringtone has been created for each person (which is something you will learn over time). It really is a handy little feature LG had created.

The feature is tucked away in the Settings application and you can enable it by following the guide below.

LG G6 Ringtone ID

  1. Launch the Settings application
  2. Tap on the Sound & Notification tab at the top
  3. Scroll down to the Sound section
  4. Then toggle the Ringtone ID feature on
  5. Tap the Ringtone ID option and customize which calls get a unique ringtone (optional)

Explanation

As mentioned, you have been able to set a unique ringtone for each person in your contact list for a while now. However, setting this up is tedious and can take a lot of time if you have a large number of contacts. Some choose to do this for just their favorite or important contacts, but it’s still a monotonous task and it will only be helpful a limited number of times when those few people contact you. This is why I was so interested in the LG G6 Ringtone ID feature when it was announced.

Now, it only takes a single tap to toggle a feature on and all of your incoming calls can have their own unique ringtone (if you choose to customize it that way). There will still be the learning curve as it can take time for you to figure out and remember which people have which unique ringtone, but it is a set it and forget it type of feature and that is the level of convenience that smartphones are made for. So to get started, we just need to dive into the Settings application.

LG G6 Ringtone ID Options
If you want a custom ringtone set for all contacts or all incoming calls, you’ll need to set it up that way.

From here, look at the top and tap on the Sound & Notification tab. Toward the top of the screen you should see a Sound section and within this area is a feature called Ringtone ID. By default (at least on my T-Mobile LG G6) this feature was turned off so you simply need to tap on the toggle icon to turn it on. On my device, the default customization option was set to only use a custom ringtone for the people in your contacts list who are set as a favorite.

However, there are two other settings to choose from here and tapping on the three little dots next to the toggle will let you choose between them. Once in the second area of the LG G6 Ringtone ID feature, you can choose if you want a custom ringtone for your favorite contacts, for everyone in your contact list, or for every single incoming call that you receive. I personally like to see one for every single incoming call, but this is a personal preference so set it up how you like.

Once everything is setup and the feature is toggled on, you can simply tap on the Home button to go back to the Home Screen and the LG G6 will customize the ringtones for you.
