How to Boot the LG G4 into Recovery Mode?

The LG G4 ships with Google’s stock version of Android Recovery. The company also doesn’t change the way we access this special boot mode either. So today I’ll be walking you through how to boot the LG G4 in Recovery Mode so that you can perform a factory reset, create backups, and more.

Android is a rather complex mobile operating system and there are multiple modes that come with it. As I previously showed you, one of the unique modes for Android is the LG G4 Safe Mode. With that mode, you can disable 3rd-party applications which can then help to figure out if one of them is causing problems. Another mode that we can get into is the LG G4 Recovery Mode.

What is Recovery Mode?

Recovery Mode for the LG G4 is much like it is for other Android devices. From it, we can perform various tasks with the most common being a factory data reset.

There are other features that can be accessed in this special boot mode, as well. But more often than not people believe they will be able to recover lost data from LG’s Recovery Mode. Sadly, this is not possible. This will help you to recover from a bootloop or a bricked LG G4, but it will not recover any of your own personal data.

Now, if you have a custom recovery installed then you can create and restore from snapshot backups of your LG G4. But very few people are installing TWRP these days. If you are running TWRP on the LG G4 though, you’ll be happy to know the process to boot the LG G4 into Recovery Mode is going to be the same.

How to Boot to LG G4 Recovery Mode?

1. Power Down the LG G4.
   • Once you think it’s turned off, wait 5-10 seconds just to be sure.
2. Then press and hold the Volume Down and Power Buttons at the same time.
3. Continue holding these two buttons down until you see the LG logo appear on the screen.
4. As soon as you see the LG logo, let go of the Power button.
   • This should just be one quick second. Don’t wait too long.
5. After 1 second has passed, immediately press the Power and Volume Down buttons again.
6. Continue holding the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the recovery menu.

Now, I tried to be vague here as two people can have two completely different versions of software installed on the recovery partition of the LG G4. Most of us will not use anything beyond the stock Android Recovery Mode which is why you’ll likely be booting to a menu with a white background.

If that’s the case, then the only thing you can do here is perform a factory data reset.

Those of you who installed a custom recovery solution (such as TWRP) will be booting to its main menu instead. It doesn’t matter which recovery software you have installed. The process of booting the LG G4 into Recovery Mode will be the same.

How to Boot Out of Recovery Mode?

Then what about getting out of Recovery Mode on the LG G4? What if you accidentally booted into Recovery Mode? Thankfully, we can exit this special boot mode by following the prompts on the screen. You’ll be using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to control which option is highlighted on the screen.

So simply highlight the “No” button by pressing the Volume Up button and then press the Power button to confirm the selection.

This should boot you out of Recovery Mode and attempt to boot you back into the Android OS. I know that some people end up getting stuck in a bootloop here with the LG G4 rebooting into Recovery Mode over and over. If that is the case, then your first option here is to perform a factory data reset and erasing the phone.

The LG G4 boot loops like this because something is wrong with your Android OS firmware (possibly an issue from installing an OTA update). The most common way of fixing this is to simply erase everything and start over. I know it’s not ideal but unless you know exactly what caused the bootloop then it’s going to be a guessing game for most of us.

If that doesn’t fix it then you’ll need to find a way to manually install LG Firmware with a program called LG Flash Tool.
