A popular maker of mobile mounts for car, iOttie, has today revealed a data breach incident on it’s shopping site.
The company disclosed that a skimmer has allegedly stolen the sensitive data of it’s customers, via a MageCart-type attack on it’s shopping site. Thus, iOttie advises it’s customers to monitor their credit card and bank statements for suspicious transactions.
Skimming iOttie Shopping Site
The advancement of technology and internet expansion across the world has given rise to various kinds of online frauds. A popular one among these is MageCart(or skimming) – a technique when a threat actor inserts a malicious JavaScript in the target company’s website and steals the data entered by customers at the checkout page.
This has long been in existence and continues to flourish even if new blocking tools are invented. One latest company to fall victim to is iOttie, a US-based mobile mount and accessories maker, that disclosed a data breach this week.
In it’s notification, iOttie says a criminal e-skimming occurred on it’s online shopping site from April 12, 2023 to June 2, 2023, where the unknown threat actor has stolen their customer data. Though the malicious data stealing code was removed with a WordPress/plugin update, the damage has already been done.
iOttie has not identified the threat actor behind this attack, while also didn’t disclose how the breach actually happened but the company noted that sensitive information like the customers’ names, bank account numbers, credit and debit card numbers, security codes, access codes, passwords and PINs have been stolen.
Thus, iOttie customers who purchased any of their products between April 12th and June 2nd should monitor their credit card statements and bank accounts for suspicious activity. Stolen sensitive data as such will most likely end up in dark web marketplaces, where other cyber criminals buy it for more fraudulent activities.
