India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is banning yet another 232 apps in the country, effective from next week.
While it didn’t go into detail, these apps comprise betting and loan lending and are linked to China. This is triggered by an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs, invoking India’s IT law. Names of all the apps that are on the list are yet to be revealed.
Blocking Access to Chinese Apps
As per ANI, the Indian government is set to ban a fresh list of 232 apps in the country soon. This bunch includes a mix of betting (138) and loan lending (94) apps – with all of them linked to China.
This comes from the Ministry of Home Affairs’ recommendation to MeitY, which has the executive power to ban apps under Section 69 of India’s IT law. While the department is yet to state a proper reason and the list of apps involved in this – we assume it’ll cite national security as the cause.
Earlier, the Indian government banned hundreds of apps belonging to China – citing similar reasons. The blocked bunch includes popular names like TikTok, PUBG, AliExpress, etc.
This triggered China – as it expressed concerns about bilateral trade and economic relations with India. Yet, India continues to ban apps that are linked to China, citing security concerns. Though the government officials didn’t mention any specific reason, fears of spying could be the most likely reason.
Several countries, including the USA, have earlier banned several Chinese companies from operating in their countries, citing similar security reasons.
