Updating your LG TV is important to ensure you have the latest features, bug fixes and security patches. LG provides regular software updates for it’s smart TVs running WebOS version 4.0 or higher. These updates range from minor user interface changes to critical security fixes.
If you have a LG smart TV running WebOS 5.0 or higher, you can update the software directly from the Support settings. Follow these steps:
- Ensure that your TV is connected to the internet and has a stable connection.
- Using your LG remote, press the settings button(it usually has a gear icon or “settings” written on it).
- Navigate to “All Settings” by pressing the down arrow button and then press OK.
- Use the arrow keys and the OK button to go to “Support” and then select “Software Update”.
- If an update is available, you will see the “Download and Install” option. You can also enable the “Auto Update” option for automatic updates.
- Select “Download and Install” to initiate the update process.
- Once the download is complete, your TV will restart to install the update. Do not power off or unplug the TV during the installation process.
For LG smart TVs running WebOS 4.0 or 4.5, the update process is slightly different. Follow these steps:
- Ensure that your TV is connected to the internet.
- Press the settings button on your remote to open the Settings menu.
- Navigate to “General” by pressing the down arrow button and then press OK.
- Use the right arrow button to go to “About This TV” and press OK.
- Select “Check for Updates” and press OK. You can also enable the “Allow Automatic Update” option.
- If an update is available, you will be prompted to download it. Select “Yes” and press OK.
- After the download is complete, power off your TV for 10 seconds and then turn it back on to complete the update.
If you are unable to update your LG TV using the normal methods or if you want to fix specific issues, you can update it using a USB flash drive. Here’s how:
- Find the model number of your TV. You can find it on the product sticker at the back of your TV or by pressing the mute button on your remote three times.
- Open a web browser on your computer and go to the LG Software & Drivers support page.
- Enter your TV’s model number in the search bar and select it from the drop-down menu.
- Download the update file from the Software File link provided on the page.
- Extract the downloaded file using File Explorer.
- Create a new folder named “LG_DTV” in the extracted file location. Your LG TV will look for this folder when searching for updates.
- Move the extracted file into the LG_DTV folder.
- Connect a USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of storage to your computer.
- Copy the LG_DTV folder by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + C.
- Paste the folder onto the USB drive by navigating to the USB drive and pressing Ctrl + V.
- Safely remove the USB drive from your computer and plug it into your LG TV.
- Your TV will display “USB Update Ready”. Select “Install” to initiate the update process. Note that you can only update to a software version higher than your current one.
- After the update is complete, power off your TV for 10 seconds and then turn it back on. It may take a few minutes for the process to complete.
Please note that the steps for updating via USB may vary slightly depending on your TV model and WebOS version.
