In this step-by-step guide, we will show you ‘How to Fix RIF is Fun For Reddit to Work Even After the New API Pricing’. Reddit made some major changes on July 1st, 2023, which effectively killed off most third-party applications that people were using to access the website. While some apps that focused on accessibility features were given exemptions, other popular applications like Relay and Boost were told that they had to pay upwards of 20 million dollars per year to retain access to Reddit’s APIs.
However, there is a workaround that we can do by patching the app with a client ID that we create from our own personal Reddit account. This is free to do, at least as of right now, and it is quite easy thanks to an application called ReVanced Manager.
We have already written an article on how to patch other Reddit apps like Relay and Boost, and the process shown in the tutorial can be used for most of the popular third-party apps for Reddit. So, if you have one that you would like to use, then let us know about it via the comment section.
Creating a Client ID
We will show you how to patch the RIF, which is fun for Reddit applications so that it can continue to work. To begin this process, we first need to create the client ID we mentioned from our Reddit account. We can do this by visiting the website reddit.com/prefs/apps.
Fix RIF is Fun for Reddit to Work Even After the New API Pricing
- From there, you need to click on the Create an App button that you see and then you need to fill in some of the details. Specifically, you need to give this app a name, and since you are doing this for the RIF app, just go ahead and name it that.
- You also need to fill in the redirect URL field, for patching the RIF is fun for the Reddit application, then this needs to be set as Redditisfund://auth.
- You also need to make sure that you select this as an installed app and not a web app, which is set as a default. Then, you have to verify with Reddit that you are not a robot and tap the Create app button.
- You should see a newly created app that has been added to your own Reddit account, and if you look, you will see a string of 22 characters. This will consist of letters, numbers and symbols, so you have to highlight and select that 22-character string and then copy it.
- You then have to paste those characters into a newly created text file. It doesn’t matter if the txt file is created on the device itself or is done on your PC before being transferred to your smartphone.
- This txt file should only contain those 22 letters, numbers, and symbols. You now have to save that text file, which needs to be named Reddit_client_ID_revanced.txt. You have to save that text file in your root directory.
Ensure that this is not being saved to the downloads folder, for example, or the documents folder on your smartphone. It needs to be saved in the root directory of your internal storage or internal memory.
Downloading the Necessary Applications
- You must then download the APK file for the RIF Is Fun For Reddit application. We usually go to a website called APKmirror to download unaltered APK files, as it is a source that we trust. But if you trust another website or an app repository, you should download that APK file from there.
- You just need to ensure the RIF app is not installed on your device. If it is, then go ahead and uninstall it before you proceed. You can even go into the settings area of the RIF application if it is already installed and create a backup to export all of your personal data ahead of time.
- You can then import that information after you reinstall the patched APK file, so download the APK file for the RIF app. Then, you will download the ReVanced Manager application from their official GitHub page.
- You can see that version 1.3.8 is the latest version of this app but if you see a newer version listed there, you will probably want to download that one instead. Sideload the APK file for ReVanced Manager like you would any other app.
Patching the RIF Application
- After installing the APK file, open it up and when you first launch the application, you will be asked to grant the app permission to access your files.
- After allowing access, you will be asked to permit it to install other APK files; go ahead and allow that as well. Since you can use this app to uninstall the patched APK file, RIF is fun for Reddit.
- You may also see a prompt mentioning that you can allow the app to bypass Android’s battery optimization feature if you would like, but I don’t think that that is required since it doesn’t need to run in the background at all.
- In fact, once you have patched the file you are working on and installed it, the ReVanced Manager application can be uninstalled completely. So, from there, let’s tap on the Patcher tab down at the bottom and then you need to select an application.
- But instead of picking one from the list, you have to tap on the storage button at the bottom right and then tap on the APK file for the RIF Is Fun for Reddit application that you just downloaded.
- Now, you can tap on the selected patches option and you need to ensure that the only thing you are patching there is to change the OAuth client ID. So, with this ONLY selected, you have to tap on done and if you have put that client ID string in the file name correctly and stored it in the proper place, then you are ready to tap the patch button that you see down in the corner.
- Assuming everything was done correctly, you should not get any error messages with this text output; instead, it should complete the patching process and tell you that you can now install the APK file.
Finalization and Export
- But if you use Reddit on multiple devices, such as two smartphones or a smartphone and a tablet, for example, then you can tap the three-dot menu icon up at the top right and then select the export APK file. That way, you can save time and share the APK file with your other devices before installing it.
- Either way, the patched APK file can be side-loaded just like you would with any other app you downloaded from outside of the Google Play Store. You will, however, see a notice from Google Play Protect about some changes made to this application and since you did the patching yourselves, you know exactly what has changed and that it is safe to install.
- You just need to tap on the more details link there and then allow it to install the app anyway; with all of this done, your newly patched version of RIF is fun for Reddit has been installed, and it can be opened up and used like normal.
- As we mentioned before, we understand why Reddit has decided to put it’s API behind a paywall; we just disagree with how much they have chosen to charge for it. The pricing they decided on was clearly made in an attempt to kill off these third-party apps, even if they try to make it seem like they are doing it to prevent AI start-ups from creating models based on their data, which isn’t even their data, to begin with.
- Since all of it is coming onto the Reddit platform for free by it’s users, now you have a patched version of the RIF application for Reddit that can be used just like it always has been.
