How to Fastboot the Sony Xperia Z3

When I was preparing a walk-through about how to install a custom recovery on the Xperia Z3, I noticed that getting your device into Fastboot mode was a requirement. Since this isn’t straight forward for a lot of people, I decided to write up a very quick tutorial on how to Fastboot your Xperia Z3.

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure you have the proper drivers installed. Sony has thankfully published this driver file on their website and you can click here to grab it. This will download a zip file to your computer so you will need to extract it. If you don’t have a version of Windows that will extract it for you, I recommend downloaded WinRAR or 7zip to extract it manually.

Once this driver is extracted, you can right-click the Xperia Z3 from within your Device Manager window and tell it to update the driver. Browse to the location of the driver that you just downloaded and extracted and let Windows do its thing. Once this is completed, you should be ready to boot your Sony Xperia Z3 into Fastboot mode. This process is very simple and very easy so let’s begin.

Fastboot the Xperia Z3

  1. Turn the Xperia Z3 Off
  2. Hold Down the Volume Up Button
  3. Connect the Xperia Z3 to the PC
  4. Keep Holding the Volume Up Button
  5. Release the Volume Up Button When You See the Blue Notification Light
  6. Your PC Should Say the Xperia Z3 is Connected

See, the process is rather simple. You will need to hold down the Volume Up button before you plug it in via a micro USB cable and you’ll want to keep it held down while you plug it in. After you plug the cable into the Xperia Z3, it will take a few seconds but as soon as you see the notification light flashing blue, then you can release the Volume Up button. Once all of this has been completed, you will now be in Fastboot mode. If you need to flash something via ADB you can do so now. Or, if you were just tested to see if you can do it, you can simply hold the power button down until the device reboots. Once the device reboots, it will boot you right back into Android like it normally does.

Let me know if you have any questions about this walk-through. It should be fairly straight forward but since there are so many different versions of Windows, some people might need to do things slightly different. If you do have a question, I recommend that you leave a comment at the bottom of this article.
