LinkedIn is the latest company to cut jobs to stay afloat in the hard economic conditions, with 716 job roles shaved off from its total workforce.
The company is also winding up its InCareers app in China and exiting the market for good. Though walking out of China, LinkedIn says it’s creating 250 new job roles according to the current market needs. People from operations and support may apply, says the company CEO.
LinkedIn Walks Out of China
LinkedIn is one of the many that stayed for long in China, even though the local restrictions are tough. At the time of launch, LinkedIn agreed to whatever the Chinese government said to operate there – that led US senator Rick Scott to call the move a “gross appeasement and an act of submission to Communist China“.
Yet, the company continued to work and struggle and after bearing this for so long, LinkedIn is finally shutting down in China! The company announced cutting about 716 roles out of its 20,000 workforce this week and shutting down the InCareers app – which was made dedicatedly for Chinese users.
In a message set out by LinkedIn’s CEO Ryan Roslansky, he called this move aimed at streamlining the firm’s operations, while also expanding the use of vendors.
“With the market and customer demand fluctuating more, and to serve emerging and growth markets more effectively.”
Well, a LinkedIn spokesperson said they’re creating 250 new jobs amidst these fresh layoffs – that would be more meaningful and relevant to operations and support teams.
LinkedIn is the only major Western social media company operating in China. But with the latest moves, it’s almost out of it. The company is pulling the plug on its InCareers app too – on August 9th, which it made dedicatedly for Chinese users.
Earlier, LinkedIn said it was shutting down in China citing a “challenging environment“, but has only been serving the InCareers users. As if that settles it, the company’s spokesperson said the firm will still keep a presence in China to help companies operating there to hire and train employees outside the country.
