HMD Global, the company behind Nokia smartphones, is set to make it’s smartphone lineup soon, as announced by it’s CEO.
While he didn’t name any specifications or timeline for the launch, the CEO noted maintaining both Nokia and HMD phones side-by-side. Although HMD’s licence for handling Nokia smartphones will end in 2026, it’s unlikely that the company will renew it if it has it’s own branded phones.
Learning From Nokia’s Business
Nokia, the grand company once known for it’s legendary phones, is now pushed aside by Chinese OEMs. While it’s still reigning in the business network, Nokia’s smartphone lineup is thwarted by many competitive ones.
This led the ownership to wobble and change hands often. After failing to succeed with Lumia phones, Microsoft sold the Nokia business to HMD Global in 2016 – which, too, has been struggling to keep up with the tough competition.
Though it tried to stand out by selling phones with faster software updates – through the Android One program, but eventually failed. Part of this is because of Google, which didn’t deliver updates on time. But HMD, too, was unable to supply necessary updates when needed, especially with it’s experimental hyped Nokia 9 Pureview.
Well, learning from all these mistakes, HDM Global is making it’s smartphone lineup, as announced by it’s CEO Jean-Francois Baril this week. While they don’t intend to discontinue Nokia phones, they partnered with undisclosed services to make the HMD-branded smartphones and sell them alongside Nokia handsets.
While there’s no timeline on when we could see the first HMD-branded smartphone, the company may ditch Nokia phones after their license period, ending in 2026. Nokia currently has handsets in the budget and mid-segment and discontinued premium phones a long time ago.
