Google is finally rolling out what it promised in this year’s I/O event – an unknown tracker alert for Android, this week.
Coming to Android 6+ devices, this feature will inform users of any unknown trackers stalking them, to learn more about this tracker and it’s owner and also to turn it off for good. Though it reduces the legitimate chances of tracking your lost devices from a thief, stopping illegal spying is needed these days.
Alerting on Unknown Trackers
Digital tracking has reached new heights in the internet age, from cellular devices to specially crafted software and dedicated accessories; most of these practices are justified for keeping your loved ones safe. Well, not everyone has the same purpose, as some stalk or spy on their targets for malicious purposes.
Thus, to tackle this, Google has developed a new feature called the Unknown Tracker Alert system, now rolling out to Android 6+ devices. The company discussed this feature at this year’s I/O event, which alerts users of any unknown trackers they’re attached to and to disable them for good.
Once available, the feature will inform users through a notification that an unknown device is tracking them and tapping on it will reveal more details – like a map of where it travels with you, it’s serial number and info about the device’s owner.
And if you can’t find it, you can tap on a “Play sound” option to make the accessory ring for detection. And if you feel suspicious, the feature will provide instructions to deactivate the device in order to cut it off from it’s spying owner. Google says users can also manually check for suspicious devices – by going to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Unknown Tracker Alerts and selecting the “Scan now” button.
